Senior Plate Victory

27th Mar 2019

Camphill's footballers secured another title yesterday after more penalty shootout tension! However, the afternoon began with disappointment due to a narrow defeat by Gracehill in the Senior Cup semi-final. Having traded victories in recent tournaments, both teams expected a very tight match and so it proved. Few clear chances emerged, with any Gracehill opportunities being capably dealt with by Harry in goal. Whilst Camphill had lots of pressure, we were unable to find space around the penalty area to test their keeper. It seemed the match was heading towards extra-time, but a good move and confident finish sent Gracehill to the final.

There was no time to feel sorry for ourselves as we had to prepare for the final of the Senior Plate against St. Brigid's. Whilst largely in control of the first half, we were unable to force a breakthrough and were punished at the start of the second half as St. Brigid's took the lead. It took real character for the team to re-group and continue to press forward, with a reward finally coming through Matthew's powerful and perfectly placed free-kick. Despite a few near misses we struggled to find the pass and move rhythm which had brought success in the recent 7-a-side league finals and extra time came and went with no further goals.

So, having only been involved in two penalty shootouts in the previous twenty years, Camphill was now facing its second one in a month! This time, Daniel's sudden death calmness was not needed as Carter again got us off to the perfect start and Harry followed it with a fantastic save. With St. Brigid's then hitting the post, Taylor stepped forward knowing a goal would win the shield for Camphill. If he was feeling the pressure, he certainly didn't show it as he powered his shot home to bring joy to his teammates!

The team can look back with pride on a very successful season.

Squad: Harry, Tyrese, Matthew (c), Jude, Brooklyn, Carter, Denzil, Taylor, Daniel, Ben & Peter.
