Road Safety Education - Week 1 - Child Cycle Safety

3rd Jun 2020

Dear Parent,

During the month of June, there will be a weekly task designed for you to work alongside and complete with your child/children in relation to a key road safety issue:

Road Safety Education - Week 1 Task (Child Cycle Safety)

The Road Safety Education Dept. of Infrastructure team are setting a weekly task in June for the parent to work alongside their child/children and focus on a road safety theme with the aim that both parents and children will learn and put into practise.  This week, the theme is cycle helmets and the aim is that parents and children will check and adjust the cycle helmet to ensure it does its job in the event of a fall or collision.  Too many children (and adults) are currently cycling either without a cycle helmet or with one that is not fit for purpose i.e. to protect the head.  Simple adjustments could be the difference between a slight injury becoming much more serious!

So, to start week  1 as stated the focus is on cycle helmets – please ensure your child wears a cycle helmet every time they are riding their bicycle and that it is properly fitted and adjusted to reduce the impact of a fall or collision at slow speed.  The attached document has been supplied by Department for Infrastructure ‘Safe and Accessible Travel’ as a guide for you and your child to use.
