Primary 7BC teach you how to make an erupting volcano

1st Oct 2020

Mr Clarke’s Primary 7 class are going to be such scientists! They have been learning about erupting volcanoes and this week they got to make their very own! After learning the processes of how volcanoes erupt they then decided to test their science knowledge! The students learnt the experiment and then in their class groups had to instruct each other on the step by step process of making the eruption! We then looked at chemical reactions and looked to explain why the lava comes out of the volcano when the vinegar is added to the mixture. We learned that the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a base while the vinegar (acetic acid) is an acid. When they react together they form carbonic acid which is very unstable, it instantly breaks apart into water and carbon dioxide, which creates all the fizzing as it escapes the solution.
