Primary 7BC are the ultimate mathematicians during Maths week

16th Oct 2020

What a terrific week Primary 7BC had during Maths week Ireland! We completed an abundance of tasks throughout the week which were fun, engaging and which ultimately tested our knowledge.

Firstly pupils completed a sorting activity in relation to the different types of triangles they had been learning about. These included - scalene, isosceles, equilateral and right angle. In their pairs they had to firstly classify the triangles, using a ruler, for task one and then use their knowledge to put the triangles into a Carroll Diagram. Well done to everyone, everyone really enjoyed applying their knowledge.

The class were then set a variety of Maths daily challenges and puzzles which they had to complete. Mr. Clarke provided daily spot prizes for these activities. This tested both their problem solving skills and observational skills.

Well done to Hannah who excelled at being the Maths puzzle winner!

One of P7s favourite activities throughout the week was the Emoji Simultaneous equation puzzles. These were set at three levels easy, medium and hard. The class were provided with a whiteboard and pen and they had to try and solve the equations using their knowledge of the four main mathematical operations. The pupils were all enthralled to compete with each other in a fun learning environment. It certainly got their brains thinking. The winner each time would come up to the whiteboard and explain how they found the solution. Sometimes there was more than one solution.

Have a look at Luke explaining how he found his solution.

The Pig dice game was another fun activity for the class to participate in.This is a battle of wit, maths and chance. The competitors roll their two dice and then had to multiply the two numbers. The pupils could bank an answer that was an even number but if it was an odd number they lose their points they accumulated, if they hadn’t banked them already. The pupils could bank their score\total at any time.

Finally the class participated in a problem solving activity which was based on greater than, less than or equal to. They completed this in their tables, and it was a race against the clock to see which team could put the correct numbers listed, into the correct box, based on the information which they had been given. Superb teamwork skills, communication and mathematical knowledge was shown!

Well done to Matthew, Ben, Luke, Hannah and Henry who won spot prizes for their skills shown during these problem solving challenges.

It was a fun filled week of Maths for all our pupils, I hope they enjoyed it! Mr Clarke has certainly brushed up on his Maths knowledge thanks to these terrific activities.
