P7AS Dead Sea Float Experiment

6th Mar 2026

As part of our Unsinkable topic, the P7s carried out some research into the Dead Sea.  We found out where it is located, what the climate is like and what is special about it.

Due to its high salt content, people can float in the Dead Sea easily; some people even read newspapers while they float!

We discussed how we would go about proving the statement, ‘Objects float more easily in salty water than in non-salty water.’ We would have an egg, a tub, water, salt and a spoon.  We discussed the idea of a Fair Test and how there should only be one variable with a test like this.  We agreed that the same egg, tub and water would be used in our experiment with only the presence of salt in the water being different.  We easily proved that our egg sank in the water but floated easily once we had dissolved as much salt into the water as the water could take.
