P7AM Cartesian diver experiment

27th Jan 2026

On Friday afternoon we carried out a science experiment called the Cartesian Diver. A Cartesian diver is a small object that floats and sinks in water when pressure is applied. Even though it looks like magic, we learned about the science behind it!

We created a ‘diver’ using a straw, a paper clip and blu tak which we then put into a bottle filled to the brim with water.

During the experiment we learned that when we squeezed the bottle pressure inside the bottle increased, meaning the air inside the straw was displaced with water. When we released the bottle, the air returned to the straw allowing the diver to ‘float’ to the top.

We had great fun carrying out the experiment and were very excited to take them home to show off!
