P7 enjoy a day of science and history

25th Feb 2026
The pupils in Primary 7 enjoyed a day of working together to complete two different science activities and a history activity. Great fun was had by all, and it was brilliant being able to work alongside our friends from the other class!

Experiment 1: Making a working pulley system
We worked together in small groups to create a working pulley system to lift heavy objects. This was lots of fun, but required a lot of experimenting before we got our pulleys to work how we wanted them to. We learnt about forces and how changing the direction of a force (pulling down rather than lifting up) can reduce the amount of effort required to lift an object.

Experiment 2: Making a working propeller
We used some corrugated plastic sheets, scissors and rubber bands to create a moving 'boat' in the water. We had to cut a piece out of our plastic sheets and experiment twisting the propeller to wind up the elastic band before letting it go in the water. We learnt that the spinning propeller pushes the water backwards, allowing our boats to thrust forwards in the water. We also measured how far our boats travelled in the water.

History: Creating a timeline for the night of the Titanic's sinking
We watched a video about the night Titanic sank and created a timeline of the events of the 14th-15th April 1912. We were shocked to see how quickly Titanic sank and how long it took for aid to come.
