P5JS Report Writing ✍️

5th Feb 2026

During this Term, our writing genre has been report writing. We have explored the different features over a number of weeks to lead us to our final pieces of writing.

Our writing process looked a little like this…

1. Familiarisation- We explored a range of ‘real-life’ examples of reports. Throughout this, we took the time to notice the difference between sets of instructions. This helped us to notice the common features of reports writing.

2. Analysing features- We looked for the different features in examples of report writing. We also worked in groups to explore different features of reports, which were cut and sectioned into envelopes. Each group was required to identify which feature they had been given.

3. Modelled writing- Once we were familiar with all the desired features, Miss Simpson modelled how to write an effective report. We were reminded of our key lesson from term 1 writing lesson: read over work and it is ok to make mistakes!

4. Shared writing- We created a shared report, ‘Recycling for Kids’. Everyone had an input as to what should come next and checked all of the desired features were present. This step helped us to put our knowledge into practice and reinforced our knowledge that we learnt during our recent Eco talk.

5. Guided writing- Throughout this stage, we wrote a report on ‘How to Care for the Environment’. Miss Simpson gave us a little guidance but we were very confident in our knowledge of report writing.

6. Independent writing- The final outcome! We were all able to independently write a report on ‘Lough Neagh’. Ask us about it, we are the experts now! 😉

Have a look at some of our fantastic work!
